When did you start reading this genre?

What was your first experience with the genre? The ever popular Nancy Drew or Agatha Christe? Or someone completely different?

  6. Tell us more about your mystery/thriller reading habit.

I tend to gravitate towards the England/New England/Midwestern cozies, pulp private investigation stories, and I do like a paranormal element.

When did you start reading this genre?

Perhaps ten or twelve, it's been a while.

What was your first experience with the genre? The ever popular Nancy Drew or Agatha Christe? Or someone completely different?

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. I was hooked.

    How did you discover it?

Read it during the summer. I don't remember how I got my hands on it.

Do you exclusively read mysteries and thrillers or do you mix it with other genres? If you switch genres, which other genres do you read?

I like a mixture. I started reading sci-fi and fantasy before mystery became the number one genre I honed in. I love it when there all mixed together, especially paranormal.

What makes you drop a book/author/series?

For me, I have a list of pet peeves: when the author uses "you" too many times in a stories; inconsistencies with characters/plot; incorrect facts which can easily be checked; when cuteness/quirkiness goes overboard; gross misuse of grammar; overuse of italics/parenthesis. The last one might sound like a small nit-pick, but left out of hand, it's not pretty and I find it a waste of time, especially when entire paragraphs are in parenthesis. Because of these peeves, I have developed a 50-page rule, if the story doesn't grab me or one or several of these peeves show up one or more times, I drop it.

  8. I like almost all mysteries except for the rather more graphic ones. Sometimes I get on a kick and read a number of humorous mysteries when life gets me down and I need a good laugh or at least a chuckle. My all time favorites are those set in late antiquity or medieval times, though. And I prefer series, but that doesn't stop me from reading stand-alones.

I started reading mysteries with some Bobbsey Twin books way back when and I've been hooked ever since. I loved Trixie Beldon, but was not too thrilled with Nancy Drew. I could relate to Trixie better, I suppose. And I'm one of those people who just never, ever warmed up to Sherlock. I can't abide the man. Will that make me loose my membership in the Mystery Lovers Club?

I don't read mysteries exclusively. I also occasionally read science fiction, fantasy, and other general fiction. I have a particular fondness for Star Trek novels featuring the original crew.

I heard about a few new-to-me series and might finally be nudged into the right direction when it comes to another mystery series :-)
